Health Coaching

What does a health coach do?

A health coach helps you make practical changes in your daily habits so your health improves in a way that fits your life. They don’t diagnose illness or prescribe medication; instead, they focus on supporting you with motivation, planning, and follow-through. Their role is to help you turn your own good intentions into consistent action.

How is this different from seeing a doctor or Clinical Psychologist?

Doctors and Clinical psychologists treat medical or psychological conditions. A health coach works alongside them, focusing on your behaviours—sleep, movement, stress, nutrition, and routines. Coaching doesn’t replace clinical care; it helps you apply your clinician’s advice in a manageable way that aligns with what’s important to you.

Will you tell me what to do?

No. Coaching is collaborative, not directive. You choose the goals, and the coach helps you explore options, troubleshoot challenges, and build a plan that feels workable to you. The coach helps you take ownership of your choices and make the changes you want.

How long does coaching take?

It varies depending on what you want to change. Most people see progress in a few sessions; others prefer support for several months while building larger habits. Your coach will help you decide what level of support makes sense and you can choose what’s right for you.

What happens in a session?

You and your coach review what you’re working towards, what matters to you, what’s going well, and where you feel stuck. Together you pick one or two specific steps to try before the next session. Each session builds on the last, focusing on steady, sustainable progress.

Do I need to prepare anything?

No formal preparation is needed. It helps to think about what you’d like to change or what’s been on your mind, but your coach can guide you even if you’re unsure. The coaching session itself is designed to help you gain clarity.

Can coaching actually help with my condition?

Yes! Most chronic health conditions improve when daily habits improve—sleep, food choices, activity, stress, and social support all play a major role. Coaching helps you make the changes your clinician recommends, and in a way that fits your abilities and circumstances. It strengthens follow-through and commitment, which is often the hardest part of change.

What if I’m not motivated?

The belief that motivation is necessary is very common and feeling like your motivation is low is not a barrier to starting. Coaching helps you explore what matters to you, uncover what’s getting in the way, and build confidence with small wins. You don’t have to feel “motivated” before you begin. The research on behavior change shows that motivation builds across time.

Do I have to follow a strict plan?

No. Plans are flexible and built by you around your daily realities. If something doesn’t work, you and your coach adjust it. The goal is to find habits you can keep, not to force something on you that feels like a chore every day.

Is everything confidential?

Yes. Sessions are private, and your information is treated with the same level of confidentiality as other healthcare services. If part of your care involves coordination with your doctor or another member of the Morrow team, your coach will only share information you consent to.

What if I don’t like my coach?

A good fit matters, and it’s completely acceptable to ask for a different coach. Coaching works best when you feel understood, supported, and comfortable. If you feel like things aren’t working the way you’d like, you can discuss this with your coach. If you don’t want to do this, you can contact our Head of Health Coaching for a private discussion.

What does a Clinical psychologists do at Morrow?

Our Clinical psychologists help you understand the thoughts, emotions, and behaviours that influence your health. They work with you on issues like stress, motivation, mood, and unhelpful thinking patterns. Their goal is to help you address the reasons that you’re finding it difficult to change, not give short-term fixes.

How is this different from talking to a health coach?

Health coaches focus on goals, plans, and skills. A Clinical psychologists work at a deeper level—how stress, beliefs, past experiences, or emotional patterns shape your behaviour. Both roles can complement each other, but a Clinical psychologist brings clinical training that supports mental and emotional wellbeing.

Do I need to have a mental health disorder to see the Clinical psychologist?

No. Many people come for help with motivation, stress, emotional eating, confidence, or adjusting to a new health routine. You don’t need a diagnosis to benefit. The Clinical psychologist is there to support your wellbeing, not just treat illness.

What happens in a session?

You talk about what’s working, what’s difficult, and what you want to change. The Clinical psychologist can help you understand the patterns and reasons behind your behaviour and teach you strategies to manage them. Each session builds skills you can use in daily life.

Will the Clinical psychologist give me advice?

They may offer guidance, but the focus is on helping you understand yourself and choose what’s right for you. They won’t lecture you or tell you how to live. Instead, they help you find approaches that match your values and abilities.

How long does therapy take?

Many people benefit from just a handful of sessions, especially for some challenges like managing stress or emotional eating. Others choose longer support for more complex patterns. You and the Clinical psychologist decide together what feels right.

Is everything confidential?

Yes. Your sessions are private and follow strict professional standards. With your consent, the Clinical psychologist may share brief updates with your care team to support your overall treatment, but only if you agree.

How does this fit with my fitness or health plan?

Your mind and body influence each other. A Clinical psychologist helps you handle the emotional and cognitive barriers that make behaviour change difficult—things like self-criticism, anxiety, or perfectionism. This support often makes your fitness or health plan easier to follow and easier to stick to.

What if I feel embarrassed or unsure about what to say?

The Clinical psychologist will help you ease into the conversation at your pace. You don’t need to prepare anything or have the “right” words—your willingness to talk is enough. Our Clinical psychologists are all trained and qualified to a high standard and have a great deal of experience.

What if I don’t connect with the Clinical psychologist?

You can request a different clinician. A strong working relationship is essential, and it’s completely normal to seek a better fit. Your comfort comes first. If you’re concerned, you can contact the Head of Health Coaching and Psychology at any time for a confidential conversation.

Can coaching and psychology happen at the same time?

Yes. Many people work with both practitioners, because the two roles support different parts of change. Psychology focuses on emotional patterns, coping, and mental wellbeing, while coaching focuses on practical habits, planning, and weekly follow-through. Our professional coaches and Clinical psychologists communicate (with your permission), and the combination is stronger than either one alone.
